An Obituary of One Beloved by Many

This week, on Thursday, January 21st, 2010, a 234 year old dream died.  On July 4th, 1776, this dream was born as those who created it declared their right to independence:


‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.’


This dream became a country, which, after re-claiming its freedom from tyranny, secured the foundation of its laws on September 17th, 1787, with the United States Constitution.  This document, as stated in the preamble, was designed to protect THE PEOPLE of the United States.


‘We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.’


This country had many accomplishments in its lifetime.  However, the accomplishments and the ‘spirit of America’ always seemed to be overshadowed by its darker side.  For the Jekyll of America, the American dream of prosperity and achievement, there was also the Hyde of greed, poverty and insensitivity.  Perhaps then it is with mercy that this last stroke will drain the last lifeblood from that beautiful dream that had such dark consequences.


For as of Thursday, January 21st, 2010, America is no longer a constitution republic, where the government is elected by the people, for the people, and the rights of the individual are protected from the absolute power of the majority.  That America is dead.  In its place, the terrible beast of Hyde has risen, as our government is placed on the auction block to be sold to the highest corporate bidder.  We mourn today for the loss of the America we had once dreamed we could have, and we fear the beast that has taken its place.  But fear not, for the beast has destroyed itself as well.  For just as Hyde could not live without Jekyll, so too will this soulless country die without its dream.


We know not yet what survivors this country leaves.  We can only hope that those who do survive will live to share the story of the ultimate failed experiment…the United States of America.

It's going to be an interesting ride from here. This is just one of many things that scare me about our country today. We have a government comprised of individuals whose primary concern is their own survival. Decisions are only made with instantaneous results in mind, and long-term ramifications are ignored.

Maybe we should start learning Mandarin now...

I completely agree. Do you think they'll take over the entire world, or just the weaker countries like the US? I'm thinking Europe sounds pretty good.
